Indoor Dog Enrichment: Simple Games for Short Sessions

Indoor enrichment does not need to fill a whole hour. Start with one activity your dog enjoys, make it easy to understand and give them the option to stop. There is no universal schedule that suits every age, energy level or household.

Start with a simple find-it game

The ASPCA's canine enrichment guide suggests beginning with a treat tossed nearby, then gradually making the search harder as the dog learns. Its guidance also stresses close supervision around enrichment materials.

Choose a clear area where you can see what your dog is doing. In a home with several animals, set up separately so one pet is not competing for another's food.

Set up a supervised treat break

The Calm Moments Lick Mat has a textured silicone surface and suction cups. Use a small amount of food suitable for your dog's existing diet, check that the mat is secure and stay nearby throughout. Pick it up when the food is finished.

The mat is an activity accessory, not a chew toy or a treatment for anxiety. If your dog tries to tear it, stop and remove it.

Make the next session easy to prepare

Keep the activity items together, wash feeding accessories after use and inspect them before putting them away. A treat pouch can help organise small rewards for a walk or practice session; follow its care instructions.

Watch the dog in front of you. Walking away is a reason to finish, not to make the puzzle harder. Ask your veterinarian for individual guidance if health, movement or appetite changes affect what your dog can do.

Keep a useful note for a sitter

If someone else will be caring for your dog, write down the familiar activity, the food already used and when to put the equipment away. Our pet-sitter checklist helps organise those details.
